Prince Harry’s lawyers claim Rupert Murdoch ‘covered up wrongdoing’

  • News Group Newspapers (NGN) denies the claims made by the duke and others

The Duke of Sussex’s lawyers yesterday tried to implicate Rupert Murdoch in the phone hacking case that Harry and others are pursuing against the publisher of The Sun.

The High Court was told that the newspaper magnate was personally involved in a cover-up of abuses at News Group Newspapers (NGN) that was carried out ‘at the highest levels’.

The company denies the claims made by the duke and more than 40 others, including actor Hugh Grant.

They are suing over allegations of unlawful invasions of privacy by newspapers, The Sun and the now defunct News of the World, from the 1990s to 2016.

The case will go to trial in January. At a preliminary hearing yesterday, lawyers for the plaintiffs asked for details of the case to be changed to include the names of Mr Murdoch and his son James.

Lawyer David Sherborne said there were “extensive allegations” that the Leveson inquiry had been fed untrue information in 2011 and 2012 by Mr Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks, the former boss of NGN.

Anthony Hudson KC, defending, said the group “used this as a vehicle for wider campaign interests against the tabloid press.”
