Prime Video is turning the iconic gaming series Yakuza into a TV show and bringing back American Gladiators, and I can’t wait

Prime Video is set to debut a new live-action adaptation of the hit video game series Yakuza and is said to be keeping an eye on things American gladiators reboot, giving action fans a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

The streamer saw significant success with its video game adaptation of Bethesda Fallout series, securing a season two renewal and encouraging fans around the world to pick up their Pip-Boys once again. Given the positive reception, it will be interesting to see if they can achieve a similar effect with SEGAs Yakuza.

Yakuza: Like a dragon follows Kazuma Kiryu, a fearsome and unparalleled warrior who will be played by model and actor Ryoma Takeuchi and will be set over two time periods: 1995 and 2005.

Takeuchi also takes the role very seriously, saying: “I am truly honored to have the opportunity to play the role of Kazuma Kiryu, a beloved character in the game series. I had a strong feeling that I was willing to risk my life.”

The series has put Masaharu Take in the director’s chair, who also put their heart and soul into the show. “I have more than 35 years of experience Like a dragon. The entire team’s boundless passion, talent and countless hours of effort have helped bring this spectacular story to life in an immersive series launching this year, the Year of the Dragon,” said Take.

American gladiators: what we know so far

Elsewhere, Prime Video has its eyes on the American gladiators game show, with plans to reboot the competition series for the service. This move is likely due to the huge critical success the BBC saw with Britain’s reboot Gladiators.

According to an exclusive report from DeadlineAmazon has been trying to expand its unscripted offerings on both its Prime Video and Freevee services – and American gladiators is a great choice to get the ball rolling.

Lauren Anderson, Brand and Content Innovation at Amazon MGM Studios told the site: “Gladiators is an enduring, physical challenge format that continues to captivate families around the world. We look forward to delighting our global Prime Video customers with both updated and nostalgic elements that celebrate the best of the original series.”

Deadline suggests that casting has begun American gladiators, while Yakuza: Like a dragon will be released on Friday, October 25.
