Anthony Albanese was questioned about his salary on Monday, ahead of his pay rise.
The Prime Minister’s salary will top $600,000, a new record for our elected leader.
He was questioned on Sunrise on Saturday morning about the salary, which is about nine times the average Australian wage.
“Prime Minister Monday is not a bad day to lead the country either,” said presenter Matt Doran.
“Your salary, you will get a raise, and make over $600,000 a year. Given what Australians are going through, do you think this passes the pub test?’
“I acknowledge that I am very well off,” the prime minister said, adding that it was an independent tribunal that determined politicians’ salaries.
“That’s why we made the decision to intervene in the tax cut, so that both you and I could cut our tax cut in half, so that low- and middle-income people, people who make less than $45,000, wouldn’t miss out. ‘
From Monday, Australians will receive between $350 and $4,500 extra money each year, depending on their income, as part of tax changes.
