Prey, the action thriller film that is a prequel to the film Predator, had the biggest-ever debut in Hulu history, the streaming service said.

The film, which stars Amber Midthunder in the role of Naru, garnered the most number of viewing hours across all films and TV shows on Hulu in its initial three days of release, Variety reported Tuesday.

The film’s success comes after Hulu in April revealed that The Kardashians had the most widely-viewed premiere of a TV show on the service.

The latest: Prey, the action thriller film that is a prequel to the film Predator, had the biggest-ever debut in Hulu history, the streaming service said. The film stars Amber Midthunder, 25, in the role of Naru

Hulu parent company Disney opted not to release the motion picture in theaters, as it debuted on Friday on Hulu in the U.S. in addition to Disney’s Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star banner in other areas. Disney said that Prey’s debut marked the most-watched movie on both platforms, according to the outlet.

Hulu and Disney did not release statistics behind the viewing, the outlet reported.

The film had always been plotted to debut on the streaming service, according to The Hollywood Reporter, dating back to its preproduction process before COVID-19 struck.

The outlet reported that Disney felt releasing it via Hulu was the best course it could take.

A box office insider told the outlet that Disney ‘might have had a tough row to hoe if going theatrical’ after the 2018 release of the film The Predator (which made $51 million domestically and $160 million worldwide) was a disappointment that hurt the brand.

The franchise has had its ups and downs, as the debut film in the series, 1987’s Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, made $59.7 million domestically and $160 million worldwide on a budget of $15 million, according to Box Office Mojo

The crossover film Alien vs. Predator in 2004 made $80 million domestically and $177 million worldwide on a budget of $60 million.
