President Biden is skewered on SNL for his foreign policy gaffes, confusion and teleprompter flubs in sketch show’s cold open

  • Saturday Night Live mocked the president in more ways than one this weekend with a sketch that was mostly about panda diplomacy
  • Three of the country’s beloved giant pandas were recalled to China last month from DC’s National Zoo

Saturday Night Live this weekend focused on President Joe Biden as well as the strained relationship between the US and China, as understood through panda diplomacy.

The show’s cold open mocked the 80-year-old president’s frequent blunders in public when cast member Mikey Day — doing a Biden impression — threw out a line from the teleprompter, referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping as ” Roman Numeral 11.’

Referring to Biden’s meeting with Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, Day said, “We made deals on communications, fentanyl and climate change, but most importantly, we got what America really needs right now: more pandas!”

The deceitful president then began answering questions from the press that stuck in Biden’s diplomatic history.

The US has just four pandas after the Washington DC bear (one of which is pictured above) returned to China

A reporter from the SNL briefing room referred to a moment during last week’s summit when Biden called Xi a dictator, much to the dismay of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“Would you completely negate your achievements by calling him a dictator again?” the reporter asked.

‘I would!’ Biden responded.

While character Biden was constantly criticized by the fake reporters, he opted to bring a special guest to try to turn down the flames: Tian Tianm the giant panda (played by cast member Bowen Yang).

Tian Tian was one of three pandas recently returned to China after spending 20 years at the National Zoo in Washington, DC.

The pandas were recalled by China to their ancestral homeland, in what some saw as a somewhat aggressive move by the heads of the People’s Republic of China.

When Yang was introduced as Tian Tian in the press room, he was immediately asked about his departure from the US.

When Biden tried to turn the conversation back to his presidency, he was hit with a harsh comment about his position on the current situation in the Middle East.

“You know what, I think people really look like the panda, right? Next question!’ he replied.

Ultimately, Tian Tian told the crowd that he felt his departure to the National Zoo was timely because of the possibility of Trump returning to the Oval Office after next November’s election.

‘Democracy could end. A civil war could break out,” Yang said.

a journalist from the crowd then asked. “So you’re going to vote for Biden?”

Yang: ‘MMMMMM maybe…..’

Fake Biden then interjected with, “What the hell? Hey man.’

After the real APEC meeting last week, President Xi indicated that he will soon send new pandas to the US. He called them ‘envoys of friendships’.

“We are ready to continue our cooperation with the United States in the field of panda conservation and do our best to meet the wishes of Californians so as to deepen the friendly ties between our two peoples,” said Xi last Wednesday evening during a dinner with business people. leaders.

The lazy, cuddly bears have long been a symbol of US-China friendship, since a pair of them were donated by Beijing to DC’s National Zoo in 1972.

After the three leave for the National Zoo, there are only four pandas left in the US – all at the Atlanta Zoo.

“I was told that many American people, especially children, were really reluctant to say goodbye to the pandas and went to the zoo to see them off,” Xi said in his speech.

He added that he learned about the San Diego Zoo and that Californians “are really looking forward to welcoming pandas back.”
