Preschooler in Texas finds gun and shoots his 1-year-old sibling

Boy, ‘four years old’, shoots his one-year-old brother after finding an unsecured loaded gun left behind by a relative at home

A toddler found an unsecured gun in a Texas home and used it to shoot his 1-year-old sibling, police said.

On Tuesday, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 17100 block of Sunshine Street for the reported shooting.

A preschooler, believed to be about 4 years old, found the gun in the house and used it to shoot his relative, officials said.

The 1-year-old was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez posted on social media.

The child’s father told him ABC 13 that the 4-year-old likes to play with toy guns and didn’t realize he found a real one that could hurt his brother.

The father, who did not appear on camera, was angry that an adult had left a loaded gun around the children. It is unclear which adults were home at the time of the shooting.

Police said the gun belonged to a relative who was staying at the home but was not present at the shooting.

A 7-year-old girl was also home at the time of the shooting and was not injured.

Major Saul Suarez of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said it’s important that the public is accountable and keep their guns safe.

“Make sure you secure them, especially if there are children in the house,” he told the outlet.

Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the incident.
