Premier League winner returns to England and signs for Luton as a free agent… marking the TENTH club of his career

A Premier League winner has returned to English football by signing for Luton Town, almost six years after his last appearance for a UK club.

The 33-year-old has spent the past four seasons in Russia with Spartak Moscow, after previously spending time on loan at Italian side Internazionale and Turkish side Fenerbahçe.

Luton will become the tenth club he has played for during his career, which began at Crystal Palace and went on to play for Wigan, Chelsea, Liverpool, Stoke and West Ham.

Discussing his latest signing, Luton manager Rob Edwards said lutontown.co.uk on Tuesday: ‘He trained with us last week and played 60 minutes behind closed doors. We took this decision because we think he can help us.

‘He gives us more strength in depth and versatility, because he is someone who can play on either side or as a number 10.’

“He’s played for so many different clubs in different ways and formats, and under different managers, so he’s tactically aware. We think he’s someone who can give us really good competition.

‘I don’t want to put too much pressure on him and expect too much too soon. He’s not going to come on straight away and start the games. He has to get used to what we do and how we play, but he’s fit, he can come on now and influence it, and he definitely makes the squad stronger.’

The player is of course Victor Moses, who was available as a free agent after leaving Spartak at the end of last season.

Moses won the Russian Cup in 2022, the sixth major trophy of his career.

In 2013 he won the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria, after which he won the Europa League with Chelsea later that year.

Moses went on to play in 34 of Chelsea’s 38 Premier League games in the 2016–17 Championship season under manager Antonio Conte.

He helped Chelsea win the FA Cup the following season.

Moses made his last two appearances for Chelsea in October 2018 before moving to Fenerbahce midway through the season. Both appearances came in the Europa League, which the Blues won again after his departure.

Luton manager Edwards is confident that the experience Moses has gained throughout his career can be of great value at Kenilworth Road.

Edwards added: “He’s someone we can learn from as well. He won a Premier League title under Antonio Conte playing a similar role to what we ask of some of our lads, so we can pick his brain.

‘He’s had a fantastic career, been there and done it, he’s got a great resume, but he’s also a really good guy, a quiet, humble, down-to-earth person.

‘What tells you about his humility is that he has been willing to come to us, basically on a trial basis, to show how hungry he is to play for Luton Town. We are very excited to work with him.’

Moses, who will wear number 7 on his Luton debut, said: ‘I’m looking forward to it.

‘I had a few offers from Europe but I told my agent that my mind was set on staying here and here we are. I am very happy and honoured to be at this club and I can’t wait to get started.

‘I spoke to Rob before I came here, I spoke to the board and they told me the plan and the history of the club. I just want to be part of the success.

‘I want to come here and enjoy the football, work hard for the club and the team, and get back to where we belong in the Premier League.’
