As political strategist Prashant Kishor looks to transform his ‘Jan Suraj’ campaign into a political party, he is keen to shed the perception of the new organisation being tied to a particular constituency. He wants to do this by including a proportionate number of representatives from different social groups in the party, in line with their population share.

The new party, to be launched in Bihar on October 2, will have a 25-member central committee with proportional representation from general category, other backward classes (OBCs), extremely backward classes (EBCs), scheduled castes and minorities, representatives of ‘Jan Suraj’ said.

Earlier they had said that there would be equal representation of these communities, but then they revised their statement and said that these social blocs would have their share in the overall census in line with their population.

The Bihar government recently conducted a caste survey to map the number of different communities.

The 25 members elect a leader of the party for a one-year term. The representative of the most deprived community will get the first term, followed by the other communities, they said.

Kishor has already announced that he will not be part of the leadership group and will continue his tour of his home state.

He wants the new party to get off the ground before the next state assembly elections, which are due in late 2025.

According to a recent announcement, any campaign founder who has submitted at least 5,000 proposals can participate in the election process to become a member of the party’s central committee.
