A powerful earthquake off the coast of Indonesia has been felt in the Northern Territory.

The magnitude 7.8 earthquake was detected in the Arafura Sea at 3:17 a.m. local time (4:47 a.m. AEDT) on Tuesday 308 km from the city of Tual in the Moluccas region, prompting an alert of tsunami by the Indonesian authorities.

The impact was felt in Darwin and other parts of the Top End, including Katherine as far south as Tennant Creek and in the extreme south of the Kimberly.

The Met Office says there is no tsunami threat for Australia.
