Post-Thanksgiving chaos as hundreds of flights are set to be impacted by storms and powerful winds

The post-Thanksgiving rush to go home faces a slew of stormy weather across the country, with New Orleans being hit by a tornado this weekend.

With everyone trying to get back home to get back to work on Monday, there are wind advisories for about nine million people in the Southeast, including Louisiana, where a tornado was confirmed on Saturday.

About 10,000 were without power after weather hit St. Charles Parish with winds of 86 to 110 miles per hour.

Video showed the intense storms hitting the region with further images showing a ton of damage and downed power lines in the New Orleans metropolitan area.

A New Orleans power company said they hoped power would be restored by 4:30 p.m. local time. That reports NOLA.com.

The area also experienced multiple maritime warnings throughout the evening due to the wind and rain.

Forecasters warned people near the tornado’s path to watch out for flying debris that could damage mobile homes, roofs, windows and vehicles.

A Jezebel reporter put it succinctly, tweeting, “Just boarded a plane in New Orleans, storm passing through, and our phones all blasted an emergency tornado warning at the same time. We left anyway, it was the roughest, wildest climb I’ve ever experienced, people screaming/praying/vomiting. And the pilot is making a 6 Flags joke.’

But with heavy rains hitting much of the southern half of the country moving toward the mid-Atlantic, cities from Chicago to Atlanta to Washington to Nashville could affect travel.

About 55 million people were expected to move more than 50 miles from home during the holidays, about 98 percent of pre-pandemic levels, according to AAA.

Airports saw 2,327,284 passengers pass through U.S. airports on Monday, up from 2,321,546 in 2019, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Long check-in lines are already piling up at JFK in NYC

AAA said the majority of travel was by car, with 49 million Americans expected to hit the roads this Thanksgiving season as the Belt Parkway in Queens, New York, is already experiencing delays and backups

Rain will hit the northeast in New York, Philadelphia and Boston on Sunday afternoon and evening. Strong winds and lightning can slow travelers down.

There is also a chance of a mountain blizzard in the Pacific Northwest this weekend, NBC news reports.

Parts of Cascadia and the Rockies have warnings for winter weather and high winds through at least Sunday.
