Portuguese cops ‘hunt group of British tourists’ after teen was fatally stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle while they were being robbed in Lisbon

Police in Portugal are on the hunt for a group of British tourists after a teenager was attacked with a broken bottle and left for dead in Lisbon on Saturday.

A gruesome video shows the moment Daniel Galhanas, 19, was stabbed in the neck in the Bairro Alto neighborhood at around 4.30am this weekend.

According to local media, Daniel was targeted while trying to defend his friend, one of several Sintra Line gang thieves trying to rob the British tourists.

Family members have denied Daniel’s involvement with the gang and say he was only trying to help his friend when he was attacked.

A tourist is seen launching a bottle at Daniel’s friend before stabbing the victim, and running away as Daniel stumbles and collapses in a pool of blood on the street.

Daniel suffered cardiac arrest and was taken alive to São José Hospital after being found by volunteer firefighters, but he did not survive his injuries.

The group, who police say are British tourists, are seen in an altercation on a Lisbon street at around 4.30am on Saturday. Daniel is pictured in a black top and white pants

Video footage from above the street shows a dozen people crashing on the road as cars pass at the intersection of Calçada do Combro and Largo do Calhariz.

According to police, the gang targets foreign tourists on weekend evenings as they walk through the city after a night out.

The judicial police are now investigating the case and say they have already interviewed several witnesses.

Stabbing victim Daniel Galhanas was first identified as one of the gang members who attacked the group, believed to be British tourists, in Lisbon.

A close family member said police are currently hunting the murder of a Briton.

He told local media: ‘An Englishman throws a glass bottle at his friend, who breaks it.

“The same person picks up the pieces of glass and hits Daniel, who stood in front of his friend to defend him.”

‘The group of Englishmen flee and are chased by Daniel’s friends.’

His parents have said he was not involved and was only trying to help a friend when he was attacked.

According to the family, one of the tourists threw a bottle at Daniel’s friend after the group was approached.

The bottle broke and the unnamed suspect picked up the broken bottle and used it to cut Daniel, who had come between the group and his friend.

The video shows a man stumbling away after apparently being hit with something.

A team from the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department helped Daniel when they passed by before medical professionals took him to the hospital.

Daniel was already in cardiac arrest when they arrived and did not survive his injuries.

Authorities continue to search for the group of English nationals, although judicial police admit they may have already left the country.

In 2020, a British tourist was rushed to hospital in Portugal after being stabbed during a botched street robbery during a pilgrimage.

The 27-year-old woman was stabbed in the arm by a masked robber on September 16 in Vialonga, north of Lisbon.

Local reports said the criminal fled empty-handed after seeing the amount of blood she lost.

Crime in Portugal is generally low and most crimes are non-violent; the country is ranked the sixth most peaceful in the world.
