Bizarre disguise a bumbling thief wore while threatening Port Melbourne hotel staff with a firearm before making off empty-handed in failed armed robbery

A man wearing a cape and underpants is the subject of a manhunt in Melbourne after a botched armed robbery.

The man threatened a staff member at a hotel in Port Melbourne with a firearm around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

However, he left empty-handed after the plot did not go according to plan.

Footage released by police shows the man running along the footpath before tripping over what police believe was a cape he was wearing.

The attempted armed robber fell and dropped a bucket and other unidentified items he was carrying.

As he stumbled, he turned towards the camera, and dark material – which police suspect is underwear – can be seen worn like a balaclava.

In a statement released Monday, police said the man entered a hotel, threatened a staff member with a firearm and demanded cash.

The staff could not get to the money, so the man became irritated and left.

No one was physically injured during the attempted armed robbery.

β€œIt is believed that at the time of the incident he was wearing some type of dark cloth draped around him like a cape and had dark-colored underpants on his head,” police said in the statement.

Police patrolled the Port Melbourne area but were unable to find him.
