A man wearing a cape and underpants is the subject of a manhunt in Melbourne after a botched armed robbery.

The man threatened a staff member at a hotel in Port Melbourne with a firearm around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

However, he left empty-handed after the plot did not go according to plan.

Footage released by police shows the man running along the footpath before tripping over what police believe was a cape he was wearing.

In a statement released Monday, police said the man entered a hotel, threatened a staff member with a firearm and demanded cash.

The staff could not get to the money, so the man became irritated and left.

No one was physically injured during the attempted armed robbery.

“It is believed that at the time of the incident he was wearing some type of dark cloth draped around him like a cape and had dark-colored underpants on his head,” police said in the statement.

Police patrolled the Port Melbourne area but were unable to find him.
