Popular YouTuber Hank Green reveals he has been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma

Popular YouTuber Hank Green announced Friday that he has been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and has begun chemotherapy in an effort to beat the disease.

Green is also a co-founder of VidCon, an annual convention for fans, creators, executives and online brands featuring several viral stars.

The YouTuber made the announcement in a 13-minute video uploaded to his channel on Friday, sharing how quickly everything went up to his diagnosis.

“When you’re in the US healthcare system, you don’t expect things to move quickly,” he said. “When it starts to get a little bit efficient, it’s actually quite disturbing.”

Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that affects the lymphatic system, an important part of building bodily immunity and fighting germs.

“It seems likely we caught mine early. Still waiting for a scan to confirm that,” said Green, who later tweeted that he had started chemotherapy.

Green’s brother John is a popular young adult author, including The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns, and Looking for Alaska, all of which have been adapted for film and television.

The Fault in Our Stars adaptation earned over $300 million at the box office internationally.

The Green brothers often collaborate on YouTube videos and co-host a podcast called Dear Hank and John.

“Important news from Hank,” the elder Green wrote in a tweet Friday. “My little brother is my closest collaborator, oldest friend and my absolute hero. Thank you for loving him as much as I do, and for supporting us – and each other – through a difficult time.”

Hank Green added in his video that he has received tons of advice from friends who have dealt with various cancers.

He wasn’t sure how battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma would affect his future work.

“I play it by ear,” he said. “I know I’m going to feel like a mess, like it’s going to be really unpleasant.”

VidCon announced later Friday that Green would not appear at the upcoming event in Anaheim.

“Due to his recent diagnosis, Hank will be unable to attend VidCon Anaheim 2023 next month,” the VidCon Instagram account wrote.

“To our co-founder, go-to science guy, and only person on the internet who seems to understand where all the wax goes, we’re sending all the love from the VidCon community and beyond.”

In the end, Green admits they caught the disease early, but they clearly have a sense of humor about the whole ordeal.

They say god gives his toughest battles to his strongest warriors,” Green tweeted. “He gave me super treatable early stage Hodgkin lymphoma because he knows I’m a little baby.”

After Green’s announcement, many shared their support for him in comments.

“Sorry to hear Hank! Wishing you all the strength and energy to get through this,” tweeted gaming YouTuber Seán McLoughlin, better known as Jacksepticeye.

“I don’t care if it’s parasocial, but legit love and care about you like you’re my weird uncle I never see.” You have, unknowingly, given me so much strength over the years and I hope you feel that the community can give you some strength!!’ a fan tweeted.

Fans also sent Green photos of pelicans to show their love, at Green’s request.
