Popular Sydney restaurant Warike announces shock closure as the cost of living crisis worsens: ‘The saddest news’
A beloved Sydney fusion restaurant that sprang up during COVID lockdowns is the latest to announce its closure.
Warike in Surry Hills was known for its ‘divine’ Peruvian-Japanese interpretation, with diners raving about its ‘inventive’ dishes such as scallop ceviche, oysters and kingfish.
But the commitment to excellence and ‘flawless’ service proved no match for today’s economy, where hospitality venues are closing at an alarming rate.
‘“It is with mixed feelings that we announce that Warike’s last church service will be on Saturday, September 14,” they wrote.
“We are extremely proud of our team and all of our incredible achievements.
“But the biggest achievement is that we created a safe place for our team to come together, learn, grow and be motivated to be the best they can be.”
The ‘devastating’ news follows the departure of head chef Hector Chunga three months ago and the closure of their popular sister venue, Lima, a Nikkei Restaurant in Walsh Bay.
Warike was owned by Luis Guzman, Valeriya Finogeeva and Hector Chunga. The close-knit team transformed the modest eatery into a vibrant culinary sensation.

Former chef Hector Chunga previously told FEMAIL that Warike was not just a commercial venture, but was driven by a passion for food and a love for people.
“Hospitality is not just a business, it is much more than that and that is what I teach my team. We take responsibility for the happiness of all our guests,” he said.
Locals and loyal fans of the fantastic Surry Hills restaurant, called by many the best Peruvian eatery in Sydney, were ‘heartbroken’ to hear that Warike was the city’s latest closure.
‘OMG!! Sad news! This is by far my favorite Peruvian restaurant! Warike will be missed,’ said one.
‘Why!? I’m so glad we visited you guys… Shocked and sad, you guys are amazing and the service, food and atmosphere are 10/10, thanks guys,’ added another.

Fans promised they would never forget the “spectacular” dishes full of exotic flavors, which were served as if they were “living works of art.”
A shocked regular customer asked if she could stock her freezer with 1,000 of these “sublime” lucuma fondant desserts.
Others congratulated the owners on their great achievement in making Sydney fall in love with Japanese-inspired Peruvian cuisine, and wished them a brighter future.
The owners thanked their regular customers, guests and neighbours for their continued support and invited them to ‘enjoy’ the last moments in the coming days.
“This is a huge loss to Sydney’s culinary community,” one said.
