Popular online clothing marketplace Poshmark closes down – with users furious they were given less than a week’s notice

  • Online marketplace closes at the end of October
  • Poshmark Australia, India and Britain are all closing

A popular online marketplace for new and second-hand clothing has closed. Customers were furious that they had been given less than a week’s notice.

Poshmark Australia will officially close on October 26, while the marketplace in India and the UK will also close its doors.

The platform, which has more than 80 million users worldwide, allows people to buy and sell fashion, electronics and home goods products.

The company said the decision to close was “to focus our energies and increase our investments” in core markets in the US and Canada.

‘Our mission has always been to put people at the center of commerce. From the beginning, we envisioned a vibrant community that would share their style and create the largest network of shoppable closets in the world,” said CEO Manish Chandra.

“And while our ambition to connect as many cabinets as possible remains the same, I am sad to announce that we have made the difficult decision to close three of our expansion markets.

“I know this is especially difficult news for those of you around the world who have come to know and love Poshmark – please know that I am incredibly grateful for you and for the community we have built together.

‘We hope to come back again someday.’

Australian users have until October 25 to use the remaining credits. Starting October 26, buyers will no longer be able to make new purchases and sellers will no longer be able to create offers.

Sellers have until November 1 to redeem their Poshmark earnings, after which the market will close completely the next day.

Poshmark launched in Australia and India in 2021 and was founded in Britain earlier this year.

The news has angered many customers who had numerous items for sale.

“As someone with over 500 items in my closet, why are we as sellers only finding out through this post and the pop-up on Poshmark. Some better communication would have been appreciated,” someone commented on Poshmark’s announcement post.

“I think more warning should have been given to sellers to give them a chance to sell their inventory since so many put so much work into it,” said another.

“For the amount of work put into our closets, we deserve more than a week’s notice,” one person wrote.

“As an Aussie Poshmark seller living in America, this is sad news. This platform allowed me to build a successful business at home around two children,” said one.
