Popular Aussie kid’s show Bluey breaks even more streaming records after topping US ratings for two years

Bluey was the top dog on Australian TV in 2024 after breaking viewership records on the ABC and ABC iview.

And now, according to a recent ratings survey, the beloved show is one of the biggest success stories in the United States of the past two years.

The animated children’s series has been riding high among the top ten streaming shows in the US for 112 weeks.

The figures were collected by the Nielsen ratings, which tracks the number of viewers in the US, reported the Comic book website on Tuesday.

According to Nielsen research, Bluey has been in the top ten streaming programs in the US as of October 2022.

It comes after more than 3.4 million Aussie fans tuned in to watch the final three episodes of the global hit in April.

The figures apply to the five major metropolises and regional areas via television broadcasts.

Viewing figures rose to 4.8 million as more fans caught up on the three episodes – Ghostbasket, The Sign and the Surprise – on ABC iview.

TV Blackbox reported that the Total TV National Reach (which includes viewers from all platforms as well as broadcast television) for The Sign was 4.4 million viewers.

The Sign also delivered a huge 54 per cent audience share for the ABC in the metro centres, with 2.28 million Australian fans tuning in when the episode dropped on Sunday, April 14.

Bluey triumphed on ABC’s iView children’s channel, with a monumental viewing time of 50.3 million minutes.

The Surprise episode, meanwhile, scored 1.5 million viewers in the overnight Metro ratings and a whopping 2.6 million fans in Total TV National Reach.

It comes after Disney+ revealed that the season finale of the children’s show, called The Sign, has proven to be a huge blockbuster.

The Sign brought an end to the third series of the hit animation, fans thought, before the creators dropped another Surprise episode ahead of the show’s planned extended break.

The first 28-minute finale episode was viewed a whopping 10.4 million times on the streaming giant in one week.

According to industry newspaper The Hollywood Reporter, the ratings make it the biggest single-episode premiere of Bluey on Disney+ ever.

Based on the US Nielsen ratings survey, Bluey was the second most streamed program in the United States in 2023.

With 150 10-minute episodes available on the platform, the show averages 1.19 billion viewing minutes per week in the United States.

It translates to just under 8 million minutes per episode, and The Sign proved to be just as much of a hit with avid fans.

Bluey airs in more than 60 countries and all three seasons of the Emmy-winning cartoon are available on ABC iview.

The award-winning animated series first debuted in 2018 and has since become a favorite for kids and parents alike.

Last month, BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company announced they were bringing Bluey’s first-ever animated film to the big screen, which will be written and directed by the show’s creator, Joe Brumm.

“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” said Brumm.

‘I always thought that Bluey deserved a movie in the cinema. I want this to be an experiential event that the whole family can enjoy together.”

Brumm, meanwhile, sent an open letter to followers announcing he was leaving the show, leaving fans devastated.

He confirmed that The Sign will mark his TV finale for the show as he now focuses on Bluey’s first ever film, which will be released in cinemas around the world in 2027.

“This would have been the case for me with a possible season four, so I have decided to take a break from my involvement with the TV series.

“In the event that I am unable to make more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I have written it as such.”

Elsewhere in his message, he assured fans that the show will go on without him.

“To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the movie,” he said.

The director said his Bluey crew, along with the creative people in his life, supported his decision to step down from the TV series.

He thanked parents and children around the world for welcoming the wildly popular show into their homes.

“The whole experience is impossible to describe,” he said.
