A Popeye’s in Detroit was temporarily closed after a DoorDash driver filmed dozens of cockroaches crawling all over food orders waiting to be shipped for delivery.

The woman captured the grotesque scene, which showed the bugs on the counter, utensils and bags, as she waited to pick up her takeout orders at Popeye’s in the East Side neighborhood.

‘You have cockroaches, all of you. Running all over the place,’ said the woman, who did not want to be identified.

She said she had never come across anything like it in her two years delivering food.

‘I was definitely surprised. She caught me off guard. I was shocked. I was disgusted. I just couldn’t believe they were open and working in those conditions,” she said. fox8 live.

The shocking video shows the cockroaches on the store counter, containers, straws and utensils.

The driver informed store employees about the creepy crawlers and then told his customer, who was waiting for his food, to ask for his money back.

He posted his video on social media which went viral.

The video came to the attention of the Detroit Health Department last Friday and on Monday a health inspector had done his own inspection and found evidence of roaches.

The health department said that there is an inspection there every six months because the kitchen serves chicken. To their knowledge, there had been no previous problems at that location, they added.

Popeye also found out about the video, and a Detroit Health Department spokesperson said the restaurant’s management decided to temporarily close that location. It’s unclear when the fast food chain will reopen.

According to a Popeyes spokesperson, the restaurant is run by an independent franchisee and called the conditions “completely unacceptable” in a Twitter post.

Popeye learned of the video, and a Detroit Health Department spokesperson said the restaurant’s management has decided to temporarily close that location.

Mark VanderWerp, Rose Pest Solutions, described the type of bug as ‘German cockroaches’.

The bug expert told Fox2 Detroit that they are a common pest that likes “junk food, processed food and rotten food,” multiplying easily and can cause allergies.

The DoorDash driver who raised the alarm about the roaches is happy something is being done and feels vindicated for exposing the company.

“If it wasn’t for me, this business would still be open,” he said. “I feel bad for the staff because it’s vacation time and I know they probably need their income. But at the same time, I don’t want them to work in those conditions because that’s horrible.’
