Pop star admits she thought the Christmas number one race ‘was just a plot from Love Actually’ as she targets the top spot
An American pop star has admitted she ‘thought the Christmas number one was just a plot in Love Actually’, despite being in the top spot this year.
Christina Perri has released the single Kid At Christmas with British singer Calum Scott and is in the running for this year’s number one, currently dominated by Wham!
The Jar of Hearts singer said: ‘I didn’t even know that [it was a thing] we don’t have anything like that. Nothing! No one celebrates new Christmas music here.
‘They’re all like, “Fuck all of you who make music, we only like classics like Nat King Cole.” No, I’m kidding.’
The competition for Christmas number one was fierce this year, with artists including Tom Grennan, Laufey, Paloma Faith and Perrie Edwards all releasing new festive songs.
Christmas radio stations do exist in the US, but the battle for the number one spot on Christmas Day is a distinctly British tradition.

The A Thousand Years singer said: ‘I think it’s really cool. First of all, this is definitely not why I made this song, because I didn’t even know about it!
‘I love, love, love Christmas. When [Calum and I] met, I thought, ‘Oh my god, I really hope we work together.’ When this came up, everyone knew I love Christmas, so I was just excited to be a part of it.”
Calum previously narrowly missed out on number one with his cover of Dancing On My Own after finding fame on Britain’s Got Talent almost a decade ago.
Meanwhile, Christina admitted she feels “a bit old” after releasing her debut single 15 years ago.
The song A Thousand Years famously appeared on the soundtrack of Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1, written as an original song for the film in 2011.

The 29-year-old musician teamed up with Amazon to write the special festive song It Can’t Be Christmas for their latest advert.
And in the snap, shared to his Instagram on Sunday, the singer showed his confidence in his new hit as he got a tattoo to mark the possible occasion.

The artist permanently marked the occasion with the words on his right leg, imploring his fans to “flop” his move and listen to his latest release.
Tom shared a reel on his Instagram, saying: ‘I thought I’d make it interesting. I’m going to get ‘Christmas No. 1 2024 is…’ and I’ll let you guys decide what goes on my leg. It’s up to you. Stream it, buy the vinyl. We’ll see what happens. All of you, don’t let this fail.”
The images of Tom getting the tattoo were followed by the lyrics of It Can’t Be Christmas ‘Have I went stupid? Maybe. Have I gone crazy? Someone can save me.’ The reveal of Christmas Number 1 on Friday will be the jury’s turn!’
Tom’s It Can’t Be Christmas is one of Amazon Music’s new festive releases for 2024.
The song first entered the Top 40 two weeks before reaching No. 25, before climbing to No. 6 on last Friday’s chart.
The move marks the artist’s comeback and he could be successful as last year’s Amazon song reached number two.
Tom hopes to beat the song You’re Christmas To Me by Amazon’s previous star Sam Ryder.
Amazon has had a strong, successful Christmas marketing campaign with UK-based pop stars.
In 2019, Ellie Goulding’s cover of Joni Mitchell’s River topped the charts.
