Top pollster claims Kamala Harris’ honeymoon period is ‘officially over’ and points to poll that proves it

  • Harris saw a poll jump before the Democratic convention
  • Democratic voter enthusiasm declines in new YouGov poll

Vice President Kamala Harris may be coming back down to earth after a surge in the polls ahead of her convention, as voter “enthusiasm” has fallen in a new poll.

Pollster Frank Luntz, who specializes in interviews with undecided voters, pointed to the statistic in an online post in a race that appears to be turning into a close one.

“A significant drop in Democratic voter enthusiasm in this month’s YouGov poll. (It was down from 70% last month. The honeymoon is officially over,” Luntz said. explained in a message on X.

He pointed to a nonpartisan online poll that showed Democratic enthusiasm spiking amid the hype of last month’s Democratic National Convention, following President Joe Biden’s stunning decision to step back in favor of widespread polls showing frustration with his candidacy and concerns about his age.

Enthusiasm steadily grew as Harris became the likely nominee.

Vice President Kamala Harris has seen a drop in enthusiasm in a new YouGov poll, prompting pollster Frank Luntz to declare her honeymoon period “officially over”

The latest poll, from early September, shows Republicans with a slight edge in enthusiasm, with 60 percent saying they are “very enthusiastic” or “extremely enthusiastic.”

For Democrats, that number is 59 percent.

In late June, a USA Today/Suffolk University poll found that Trump supporters were twice as enthusiastic as Biden supporters, with 50 percent saying they were “very enthusiastic,” compared to 30 percent for Biden.

That poll showed Trump supporters also getting 60 percent of the vote, while Harris was at 68 percent — more than double Biden’s.

The decline coincides with the end of the DNC, when Harris received significant TV attention and delivered a well-received speech.

Still, there are other signs that Harris’s convention bounce may have cooled. A new batch of CNN swing state polls showed a tie in Pennsylvania and a one-point lead in Georgia, while in Arizona she trailed Trump by 5 points.

She leads Trump 47-45 in the latest Economist/YouGov poll, with some polling models predicting a slightly lower-than-expected bounce. Harris enjoyed an unusual boost of publicity in the days leading up to the convention after replacing Biden, which may account for some of her pre-convention bounce.

Nate Silver’s Latest Election Prediction model Trump’s chances of winning the Electoral College have improved since late July.
