Politics expert reveals the ‘real’ reason Democrats cheered so hard for Biden’s swan song speech – and it isn’t flattering

Award-winning political columnist David Brooks said Joe Biden received a hearty round of applause for his speech at the DNC on Monday, as the audience was relieved he was dropping out of the race.

Brooks, who began his career as a more moderate and conservative standard-bearer, has drifted to the left to the point of becoming famous for a ‘bromance’ with Biden’s old boss Barack Obama.

He summed up the president’s speech as “a grim, ranting address,” with the headline calling it a “reminder that he couldn’t win the 2024 election.”

The op-ed columnist has the same praise for Biden as he did for Obama, calling him a “superior” president, but ultimately he wasn’t satisfied with Biden’s swan song and thought others would agree with him.

“Biden gave people a vision on Monday of what his campaign could have looked like. I think the vast majority of Americans will be glad we were spared it,” he wrote.

Brooks admitted in the New York Times essay that he was still angry about how he believed Biden had been “pushed” from the nomination and named Nancy Pelosi by name as the one to blame.

But he said America is past what he calls the Trump-Biden era of politics. Polls showed Trump ahead of Biden, but Harris quickly closed the gap in her month as a candidate.

“But it was clear on Monday that there has been a change in the zeitgeist, and Biden hasn’t quite grasped it yet. Anger and outrage is not the spirit that America craves right now. The culture has moved on.”

He also criticized the content of Biden’s speech, saying it was typical of the era and out of step with what he saw as the more positive efforts of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

“I was hoping for something in the spirit of the Harris campaign — exuberant and upbeat. Toward the end he got a little sentimental and said, ‘America, I’ve done my best for you.’ But overall he gave an unsmiling, ranting speech.”

Biden cried last night at the Democratic National Convention as he delivered one of his last major speeches as president.

The 81-year-old took the stage in Chicago to pass the torch to Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, on a night riddled with delays that pushed his historic farewell speech into the night.

He began by wiping away a tear as his daughter Ashley introduced him to thousands of supporters chanting “We love Joe” in the packed United Center.

During parts of his speech, his eyes were visibly watery as the oldest president in US history was overcome with emotion.

Biden acknowledged that he had made “a lot of mistakes” in his career. “But I did my best for you,” he said. “For 50 years, like many of you, I gave my heart and soul to the nation.”

The president stressed that he was not angry about his resignation, which came after increasing numbers of prominent Democrats demanded that he step down.

Biden said he acted in the best interests of the country, adding that serving as commander in chief had been “the honor of a lifetime” and that he had “much to do” in his final five months in office.

“I promise to be the best volunteer the Harris-Walz campaign has ever seen,” he said.

First Lady Jill Biden also revealed how she saw her husband “dig deep into his soul” when he decided to withdraw from the race.

In an emotional address to the president, she also called on Americans to unite with “faith in each other, hope for a better future and love for our country.”

Biden closed one of the last major speeches of his 52-year career in national politics with Democratic nominee Harris and a host of family members, including his son Hunter, onstage next to him.

The eldest daughter, Ashley Biden, introduced her father, calling him “the OG girl dad.”

Before the president’s appearance, his family members gathered in a special box along the side of the Congress Hall.

Grandchildren Naomi, Finnegan, Maisy, Natalie, little Hunter and baby Beau were in attendance, along with Hunter Biden’s wife Melissa Cohen, Naomi’s husband Peter Neal and Ashley Biden’s husband Howard Krein.

Hunter remained out of sight until the president finished his speech, but then led the Biden clan onto the stage.
