Police say 4 people fatally shot on Chicago-area subway train

FOREST PARK, Illinois — Four people were killed in a shooting on a subway train outside Chicago on Labor Day morning, police said.

Three people were pronounced dead at the Forest Park station, an above-ground stop on the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line. The fourth victim died at a hospital.

The suspect managed to escape but was subsequently arrested on a train on a different route, Forest Park police said.

“A weapon was recovered,” Forest Park Deputy Chief Chris Chin told reporters. “There is no immediate threat. This appears to be an isolated incident on this unfortunate day.”

Police were called around 5:30 a.m. Chin said he had no immediate information to release about the victims. He called the shooting “shocking” and “horrific.”

“This horrific and egregious act of violence should never have happened, even on a public transit train,” said the Chicago Transit Authority, better known as CTA.

According to the CTA, the security camera footage proved to be “vital” to investigators.

Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins said his community of 14,000 is the only Chicago suburb in Cook County where two major rail lines end.

“It’s a terrible tragedy that four people lost their lives on Labor Day weekend,” Hoskins said. “Our police and fire departments probably respond to this location more than any other location in our jurisdiction.”
