A respected police officer and the son of former Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has been arrested and charged with assault.
Nicholas James McCormack, 26, was taken into custody at 1am on Saturday after police responded to reports of assault on William Street in Darlinghurst, Sydney.
Mr McCormack was charged with three counts of common assault and one of common assault (domestic violence).
He has since been released on bail and is expected to appear at Downing Center Local Court on December 13.
The suspect is the youngest son of Michael McCormack, the former leader of the Nationals and deputy prime minister from 2018 to 2021.

The former deputy prime minister has declined to comment on the case and his son’s lawyer, Paul McGirr, has said his client will contest the charges.
‘We all have to remind ourselves of that [there is] a presumption of innocence before anyone jumps to conclusions, regardless of whether he is a police officer or the son of a politician,” McGirr said. told Sydney Morning Herald.
‘And that’s all I’m going to say at this stage because all I have is a fact sheet.’
A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed officers are now investigating the employment status of Nicholas McCormack, who had served as a constable and was attached to a special commando unit.
He was accepted into the state police force in December 2020 in a ceremony attended by his father and former Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
His father told the Daily Telegraph at the time that he was ‘very proud’ of his son, who had done ‘an excellent job’ to get through the academy.
The newly minted officer had also played in the All Australian Police AFL team in 2022 and was named ‘best player for NSW’ at that year’s championships.
The investigation into the assault allegations continues.
Nicholas graduated from the police academy in December 2020 and was accepted into the force at a special ceremony attended by his father and former Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
