British transport police have been criticized for refusing to say the gender of a person who exposed his genitals to two teenagers at a train station.

Police officers have released CCTV footage of a person wearing a dress with a purple wig, saying they may be able to assist in the investigation into the incident that took place at Theale, Berkshire station.

The grainy images show the person wearing a purple wig, black sunglasses, a blue sweater, skirt and backpack.

However, online users have criticized the police for failing to clarify whether the perpetrator is a man or a woman.

One person tweeted to British Transport Police saying they needed to know their gender – as the victims allegedly told them what gender the person was after “being cruelly exposed to their genitals”.

Just before 3 p.m. on September 2, two teenage girls, ages 15 and 16, were boarding a train at the station when someone on the platform approached the train window.

As the train started to leave the station, the person showed their genitals to the two teens before making lewd hand gestures in their direction.

They then walked into a shelter at the station and masturbated.

Agents have said the person in the CCTV footage may have information that could help their investigation.

One user tweeted that BTP is “too concerned about offending a pervert to give an accurate description of him.”

While Deb pointed out that people could discount about half the population by knowing the gender of the person in the photo.

Online, many people shared their opinion that the person depicted was a man and called for the police to clarify.

British Transport Police said: ‘We have published this CCTV call as part of an investigation into a sex offense on the railways against two teenagers. The person shown in the CCTV image may have information that could aid the investigation and bring a sex offender to justice.

‘At this stage of the investigation, our priority is speaking to the individual. There is no need for us to add further descriptions – we just want to identify the person in the photo and would encourage anyone with information to help with this.

‘We are committed to tackling violence against women and girls via the rail and metro network.’
