Police are after a man who took a woman to hospital with a suspected amputated spine after she mysteriously disappeared from the scene.

The 37-year-old woman had arrived at the emergency department at Bankstown Hospital in western Sydney shortly before 1am on January 12 with a gunshot wound to the torso.

A man had dropped her off at the hospital, but when police arrived, she fled the area on foot and her white Mercedes Benz sedan was found abandoned nearby.

Police later stopped at a home on Simmat Avenue in Condell Park, where bullet holes and shell casings were found, and a crime scene set up.

The 37-year-old woman was driven to Bankstown Hospital (pictured) in western Sydney in a white sedan after being shot in the torso on January 12.

The woman remains in the hospital with severe spinal injuries and damage to her internal organs.

Detectives launched a public appeal to help locate the man who had taken her to the hospital.

He is described as Mediterranean/Middle Eastern in appearance, about 175cm tall, with a medium build and a dark beard.

At the time he was wearing a black hoodie and black shorts over long black tights.
