Police close multiple roads around Nottingham and tram network suspended as officers deal with ‘major incident’
Police have closed Nottingham city center and suspended the tram network in connection with a ‘major incident’.
Six roads have been closed, trams have been halted and liaison officers dressed in bulletproof vests and helmets are on the scene.
They are National Inter-Agency Liaison Officers (NILO) – part of an elite force created in the aftermath of the Manchester Arena bombing.
Police have not yet released specific details about what is happening, other than saying it is a “serious incident.”
The A6008 Upper Parliament Street is currently closed from the Maid Marian Way junction towards Theater Royal.
The A60 Mansfield Road is also closed between Woodborough Road, towards Mapperley and St Ann’s, and Shakespeare Street, near the Victoria Centre.
Milton Street, the street parallel to the mall’s main entrance, and Burton Street are also closed in the city centre.
All tram services have been suspended due to what has been described as a ‘major police incident’, with tram tickets being accepted on buses.
Superintendent Neil Humphries of Nottinghamshire Police said: ‘Officers are currently on scene at multiple road closures due to an ongoing incident. Avoid these areas as they are expected to remain closed for some time.”
Maples Street in Hyson Green has also been closed, while the A609 Ilkeston Road has also been closed in both directions, with slow traffic following a police incident from Faraday Road to Bright Street. Magdala Road near Mapperley Park is also closed.
National liaison officers between different agencies have been spotted in the center of the city. Their role is to coordinate between different emergency services in the event of an incident.
Nottingham City Transport said: “There is serious disruption and delay to services this morning due to a police incident in the city center where Milton Street, part of Upper Parliament Street (Theater Square – Maid Marian Way), Burton Street and part of Mansfield The road is closed.’
