  • Funny and puzzled bathers at the scene
  • Hundreds had fun at the officers’ expense

Two police officers have been forced to ask tourists to help them get their Toyota Camry out of trouble after getting stuck on a popular Western Australian beach.

Beachgoers at Wharton Beach in the state’s stunning Esperance region watched as police officers desperately tried to free their two-wheel drive car from the pristine white sand.

Fortunately for the embarrassed officers, a white SUV with a canoe in its trunk was more than happy to help, towing the stuck police car out of harm’s way.

Wharton Beach is popular with 4WD owners with drivers able to park right next to the water’s edge if they have a suitable car.

The video of the policemen, published in stuckit quickly went viral with cops unanimously criticized for trying to drive their suburban sedan over sand.

‘Imagine having a Camry as a police car,’ said one.

I would also take him to the arena and leave him there.

Another said: “Imagine entrusting a gun to someone who drives a Camry on the beach.”

The commentators also had a lot of fun with the officers’ experience, or perhaps the lack thereof.

‘Oh, it’s fine. They are highly trained,” said one, with one reply adding: “They will tell you how well trained they are after a nine week course.”

‘Why help them? Dumb enough to drive a Camry to the beach, they can sit there and take it out.

Many lacked sympathy for the officers’ plight.

‘Imagine being special enough to think you can go to the beach,’ said one.

One poster envisioned itself as judge and jury and wrote ‘reckless driving’. Five points’.

Some commenters defended the police officers’ decision to drive to the beach in the first place and criticized those who made fun of them.

“It’s funny that no one thought they could have rushed to the beach to deal with an incident or save someone who is having cardiac arrest,” they said.

‘Maybe they just took a chance because they needed to get somewhere fast.

“Most of you keyboard warriors have never been in the situation where you had to put yourself second to save or help someone else.”

There were a lot of very sarcastic comments after the video went viral on social media.

But that didn’t stop the sarcastic comments from still coming thick and fast.

“See it’s just a gimmick you need a 4×4 to drive on the beach all you need is police stickers on your family car and bam you can drive anywhere,” said one.
