Police are warning Chicago residents that the same criminals committed nearly 50 armed robberies in five weeks

A brutal group of thieves in black balaclavas were caught on video robbing a family at gunpoint at their front door in broad daylight, the latest in a shocking string of recent robberies in Chicago.

In fact, the Chicago Police Department revealed that the city has experienced nearly 50 armed robberies in the past five weeks, with authorities saying in a warning they believe they were committed by the same three to four suspects.

Crime remains a problem in Chicago — up 49 percent from last year — just weeks after new mayor Brandon Johnson, 47, was inaugurated following a close election over a more conservative, “tough crime” Democrat rival, Paul Vallas, whom he defeated by about 13,000 votes.

The most recent case of these potentially serial robberies occurred in the Hermosa neighborhood of the city, it said NBC Chicago.

Vincent Galena Sr. was on his way to work at 6 a.m. last Friday when he was attacked, according to son Vincent Jr.

“The first guy that got closer to the truck — he got the guns pulled up to him, and from there they started pointing a gun at my dad, and the other guy who was here on those stairs,” Galena Jr told CBSChicago.

His son said his father’s wife, five children, sister and cousins were all sleeping inside during the robbery.

“More concerned about whether they would go into the house,” said Galena Jr., calling his father a hero and saying “he was trying to protect the doorway, so he wouldn’t come down the stairs.”

“In case they try to get in, he would fight back,” he added.

He lost all the money he planned to buy construction tools for that day’s work in addition to losing that day’s salary.

The community alert sent by police said they are looking for three to four people consistently wearing black ski masks, dark clothing and blue gloves.

Police also claimed they have consistently attacked people on their way to work and say they believe the thieves are responsible for a further 10 robberies that morning alone.

Over the ensuing Memorial Day weekend, at least 41 people were shot and nine killed as shootings ravaged Chicago over the holiday.

Historically, Memorial Day weekend has been marked by an increase in violent incidents in Chicago, making it one of the most challenging periods for public safety in the city.

Last year, a total of 52 people were shot and nine killed over the holiday weekend.

Hoping to de-escalate the violence, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced last week that “peacekeepers” would be deployed citywide to deal with any conflict.

But many people were still caught up in the violence as dozens were attacked by gunfire across the city.

The weekend was also seen as a crucial test for newly inaugurated Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson, who took office earlier this month with a commitment to address public safety through “intelligent and holistic approaches” rather than relying solely on on toughness.

Through May 28, crime is up 49 percent over the same period in 2022. That year ended with crime rising 41 percent over 2021, according to the the city’s own numbers.

No doubt aided by these serial thieves in ski masks, robberies in the Windy City are up 28 percent from this mark last year.

Motor vehicle thefts are up a shocking 167 percent, while homicides are up 21 percent, aggravated battery is up 25 percent, and shootings are up 55 percent.

“My administration’s top priority is to build a city where every resident feels safe, and for that we need everyone at the table,” Johnson said.

At its inauguration in mid-May, the former union touted values such as “hard work” and the Windy City’s inherent “soul.”

That said, the speech did not address the potential mass migration of prominent entrepreneurs from the city, including Chicago’s richest billionaire Ken Griffin, who moved hedge fund Citadel to Miami in the fall.

Following a shooting outside the company’s Downtown offices, Griffin bought a record-breaking $106.9 million waterfront estate in the Sunshine State — an increasingly popular destination for rejected blue staters — after announcing his plans to sell his more than 1,000 staffers from the crime-ridden metropolis.

It’s not yet clear if CME will follow suit, but as crime continues, it remains a possibility.
