pokemon go has a Squirtle Community Day Classic event July 9 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time.
As expected at a Community Day event, Squirtel will spawn in large numbers with a high chance of appearing shiny. There are also several other bonuses and benefits, which we list below.
How do I catch a Shiny Squirtle?
According to old research from the now-defunct website The Silph Road (via Wayback machine), shiny rates on Community Days are about 1 in 25, which means if you keep playing for the three hours, you should find quite a few shiny Pokémon.

If you’re short on time or Poké Balls, you can get one Incensethen quickly tap each Squirtle to check for shiny ones, walking away from any that aren’t shiny. Specifically, any Squirtle you’ve already tapped will face where your player is standing, so that should help identify which ones you may have already checked.
How do I catch a Squirtle with sunglasses?
Squirtle wearing sunglasses will not spawn in the wild. According to the official page for Niantic’s Squirtle Community Day Classicit will be available at the Field Research event.
This research just requires you to catch Squirtle to complete it, so make sure you’re running PokéStops to pick up this research if you want a turtle with sunglasses.
What Community Day movement teaches the evolution of Squirtle?
If you evolve Wartortle into Blastoise from 2pm to 7pm in your local time, it will learn the charged move Hydro cannon.
If you can’t develop it during this time, you can use an Elite TM to get started.
How is Blastoise doing in the meta?
Blastoise is no longer the cream of the crop, but Mega Blastoise is now one of the strongest water-type attackers out there. If you’re planning on investing in Megas at all (which you should, if you can), you should consider grabbing a powerful Blastoise and setting it up with Water gun And Hydro cannon.
Blastoise does quite well in Ultra League as it can be bulky as well as set up with Hydro Cannon, one of the best moves in the game.
How do I get the most out of Squirtle Community Day Classic?
The following bonuses are active during Squirtle Community Day Classic:
- 19/114 hatching distance for eggs placed in incubators during the event
- Incense lasts three hours
- Lure Modules last three hours
- Squirtle special photobombs when taking snapshots
That said, be sure to place all your eggs in Incubators during the event period and pop an incense and try to get your hands on a powerful Squirtle.
