PM to unveil master plan of Sabarmati Ashram project worth Rs 1,200 cr on March 12
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will perform “Ashram Bhoomi Vandana” and unveil the master plan of the Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Project during his visit to Ahmedabad in Gujarat on Tuesday.
The project, planned with a budget of Rs 1,200 crore, aims to revive the teachings and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi for the present and future generations, a government statement said on Sunday.
The ambitious project aims to revamp the infrastructure around the Sabarmati Ashram, provide state-of-the-art amenities to visitors and establish a world-class memorial in honor of the Father of the Nation, the report said.
Under the master plan, the existing five-acre area of the ashram, which Mahatma Gandhi founded in 1917 on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad, will be expanded to 55 acres and 36 existing buildings will be restored, according to the release.
“The project involves the conservation of 20 ancient buildings, the meticulous restoration of 13 buildings and the redevelopment of three buildings, keeping in mind the sacred goal of adhering to the original architectural simplicity and essence of the ashram. The aim is to furnish the ashram in a manner that exudes greenery, serenity and lush tranquility for all visitors,” the report said.
The master plan includes new buildings for administrative facilities, visitor facilities such as an orientation centre, interactive workshops on ‘charkha’ spinning, handmade paper, cotton weaving and leather working and public amenities.
The buildings will house interactive exhibitions and activities to showcase aspects of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and the ashram’s legacy, the release said.
The master plan envisages the establishment of a library and archive building to preserve, protect and disseminate the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi, and create facilities for visiting scholars to use the ashram’s library and archives.
The project will also allow the creation of an interpretation center that can guide visitors with different expectations and in multiple languages, making their experience more culturally and intellectually stimulating and enriching.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will attend the “Ashram Bhoomi Vandana” ceremony along with Prime Minister Modi, the release said.
On this occasion, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the redeveloped Kochrab Ashram, the first ashram established by Mahatma Gandhi after he came to India from South Africa in 1915 and which has been preserved as a memorial and tourism space.
“Modi has deep respect and admiration for Gandhiji’s principle of upholding peace and truth even in times of conflict. The rejuvenation project will continue with the utmost sensitivity and respect for the fact that the existence of the ashram goes beyond the idea of mere physical space. ” the release said.
“The ashram stands as a symbol of sacrifice and perseverance of freedom fighters, a refuge for introspection and a melting pot of moral values. Gandhiji’s legacy of simplicity and profound ideology resonates in every corner of the holy ashram,” the report said.
