Plymouth director of football to leave after Wayne Rooney’s sacking – as rock bottom Championship side draw first match since Man United legend’s exit

Plymouth director of football Neil Dewsnip will follow Wayne Rooney out the door at the Devon club.

Rooney parted ways with Argyle on New Year’s Eve after a nine-match winless run left them at the bottom of the Championship.

And Mail Sport understands that transfer chief Dewsnip will also leave the club and was not present at Home Park for the 2-2 draw against Bristol City this afternoon, with Julio Pleguezuelo scoring the equalizer in stoppage time.

Dewsnip has been at the club since 2019 and was an integral member of their rise from League Two to the Championship, but they have struggled since their promotion to the second tier, with Ian Foster making just 16 appearances before Rooney was hired.

The 63-year-old has also taken charge of the side twice on an interim basis and previously worked as a youth coach for England.

Speaking to Mail Sport last season, chairman Simon Hallett outlined his vision to lead Plymouth to the Premier League in a ‘five-year plan’ – but things have only gone downhill since Steven Schumacher left Argyle for fellow Englishman Stoke City.

Former England and Manchester United legend Rooney held the role for seven months and eyebrows were raised when he was appointed. Given his catastrophic tenure at Birmingham, the Second City club saw relegation to League One.

In a statement he thanked the club for giving him the job in May, stating that Argyle would always have a ‘special place in my heart’ and that he and the fans would have ‘memories that we will share forever’ .
