Plumbers reveal the items you should NEVER put down a garbage disposal – leaving the internet baffled over what the appliance is actually meant for

  • Prime Plumbing in Baltimore, Maryland, went viral on TikTok
  • Employees were asked what should ‘never’ be put in the garbage disposal
  • Of the six plumbers, half were against putting ‘something’ in it

A team of plumbers have stunned the internet after claiming that most people are using their waste disposal incorrectly.

Plumbers from Prime Plumbing in Baltimore, Maryland, went viral on TikTok after asking several employees to name “one thing you should never leave at your disposal.”

“Some of the answers may surprise you!” the company noted in the video’s caption, but to say people were surprised might be an understatement.

Of the six plumbers who participated, half were against throwing “anything” in the trash, including food.

The others recommended avoiding chicken bones, rice, eggshells or “anything with starch” when using the kitchen appliance.

“Then why a garbage disposal?” someone asked.

“Imagine you hire this company and they tell you straight up not to put food in the garbage disposal,” another added.

‘Then why do you have one? What is it for?’ someone else responded.

Others admitted they didn’t care what the plumbers recommended; they would still continue to use it for leftovers.

“I watched my grandma throw an entire Jersey Mike’s (sandwich) in the trash last week,” one viewer recalled.

The problem is not with the waste disposal itself, but with the pipes to which it is attached. If you use it as a trash can, you may be backing up your pipes

“There’s almost nothing I don’t throw down the garbage disposal,” another shared.

‘If I rent. I’m going to use it as a wood chipper. When I pay the mortgage I’m afraid water will flow in,” another admitted.

The plumbers may have been overly cautious, but they weren’t entirely wrong.

Fats, oils, grease, starchy foods, eggshells, shellfish, coffee grounds and vegetable peels can all clog the pipes, according to Consumer Reports.

While fruit, fruit stones, vegetable scraps, corn on the cob, cooked meat, bones, leftovers and ice cream all got a stamp of approval.
