PLI scheme for power transmission coming soon: Power Minister Pankaj Agarwal
Aiming to localize equipment for the power transmission sector, the Center is exploring various incentive options, including a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, union general secretary Pankaj Agarwal said on Monday.
“I have asked the industry stakeholders to think about how we can localize the supply chain of transmission equipment. Do we need a PLI like plan, explore whether it will provide any help, or other options that can be explored,” Agarwal said .

He was speaking on the sidelines of a brainstorming session organized by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the engineering arm of the Ministry of Power.
At the same event, Union Minister ML Khattar launched the National Electricity (Transmission) Plan. The plan proposes that more than 1,91,000 circuit kilometers (ckm) of transmission lines and 1,270 GVA of transformation capacity will be added over the ten-year period from 2022-23 to 2031-32 (at 220 kV and higher voltage levels). In addition, 33 GW of bipolar HVDC connections are also planned. Inter-regional transmission capacity is expected to increase to 143 GW by the year 2027 and further to 168 GW by the year 2032, from the current level of 119 GW.
The transmission plan also includes cross-border connections with Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, as well as potential connections with Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc., a government statement said.
The Ministry of Power stated that the transmission plan gives investors insight into the vast investment opportunities of over Rs 9.15 trillion in the transmission sector till the year 2032.
