PLAYER RATINGS: Tyler Adams shines while Illan Meslier pulls off several fine stops in Leeds’ win

>

Jurgen Klopp’s woes at Liverpool got worse on Saturday night when the late winner of Crysencio Summerville for Leeds gave the Reds their fourth loss of the season and their first home defeat in 19 months.

The night started disastrously after Rodrigo made a mistake by Joe Gomez before Mohamed Salah equalized the game.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier made several fine saves before Summerville scored in the 89th minute to lift Jesse Marsch’s side out of the bottom three with a 2-1 win.

So who impressed the most in the game and which men disappointed? Sports post‘s Ian Whittell is in attendance with ratings for both sets of players.

Liverpool (4-1-2-1-2)

Alice 6: A rare slip – literally – helped Leeds score, although it was Gomez’s fault. Quickly recovered and good saves from Harrison and Rodrigo followed.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6: Story of his season; was promising on offense but vulnerable on defense. But on a day when Liverpool were struggling, his attacking contribution was vital.

Joe Gomez 4: Main culprit in a horrible opening goal for not looking up to see where his keeper was. Never recovered. Using the ball was terrible.

It was a night to forget for Joe Gomez who made a disastrous mistake to gift Leeds the opener

Virgil van Dijk 6: Had a lot of work to do to cover Gomez but the defensive organization, mostly his strong point, was poor. Did better against Bamford than Rodrigo.

Andrew Robertson 7: Harrison was a handful for the Scot, but he still offered much of his usual attacking threat with his cross on Salah’s equaliser.

Fabinho 5: Didn’t use the ball well enough in midfield, with too many faulty passes, and at one point deserved a dressing from Klopp. No wonder he was addicted to the hour.

Harvey Elliot 5: A lightweight midfield performance from the youngster who didn’t see the ball enough to make an impact. On the hour, another midfielder came off the field.

Thiago Alcantara 7: Pick Liverpool’s midfield with some key tackles and interceptions as Leeds threatened to exploit the holes at the back. Tried to keep his side moving forward with his usual series of good passes.

Roberto Firmino6: Played on top of a diamond in midfield, a role that didn’t quite pan out. He had no doubts about his pace of work, but often found himself occupying similar positions to Nunez and seized some good late opportunities.

Darwin Nunez 5: Hard grafted, often falling deep in search of the ball, but thwarted a great opportunity in the first half as he was outplayed by Alexander-Arnold and repeated it in the second.

Mosalah 8: Look sharp. Might have scored in the opening minute and he did shortly after. Non-stop movement, from wide to center, made him Liverpool’s biggest threat.

Lead (4-2-3-1)

Illan Meslier 8: Eventful start, with his part in the Cooper foul, but then showed composure and made three very important saves from Nunez and a late header from Firmino.

Rasmus Kristensen 7: Right-back had his hands full with Nunez and Robertson defensively, but stuck to his task and made an odd attacking contribution.

Robin Koch6: Important block on Alexander-Arnold and a busy afternoon in which the mobility of Liverpool’s front line got him into trouble.

Liam Cooper 5: A mistake in the opening minute almost gave the Reds a goal and in the second half they were lucky enough to escape after Salah robbed him and played in Nunez.

Pascal Struijk 7: Covered for Cooper’s error with an early clearing of the goal line, one of the many key defensive moments he contributed. Often in the right place to solve problems.

Tyler Adams9: It summed up the fighting spirit he and Leeds had to show when he was involved in a pushing match with Robertson in the first half. Covered every inch of Anfield to wipe out Liverpool’s attacking talent.

Marc Roca 8: Midfielder did well by preventing the Reds from gaining traction in midfield with a graft-packed performance. Provides ample coverage for following Liverpool runners.

Jack Harrison 6: Lively performance from the winger, including one attack as he ran almost the full length of the field. Bad use of set pieces, though.

Brenden Aaronson 7: Bad luck to hit the bar with a brilliant effort and involved in many of Leeds’ brightest attacking moments. Create a good chance for Rodrigo.

Crysencio Summerville 7: Broad in midfield but used more to close defensive gaps, especially given Robertson’s threat down his wing. Did a good job even for its spectacular winner.

Rodrigo 7: He won’t score much easier goals, but he was in the right place at the right time and made the most of the space the Liverpool defense allowed him. Left surprisingly early.
