PLAYER RATINGS: Marcus Rashford starts running for Manchester United after the World Cup, but Martin Dubravka puts in a twitchy performance in goal against Burnley despite a clean sheet.

  • Marcus Rashford scored an excellent solo goal in Manchester United’s 2-0 win
  • Christian Eriksen had opened the scoring in the round of 16 of the Carabao Cup tie
  • Burnley had to pay for lacking a clinical advantage after having chances to score
  • Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro also put in impressive performances for the Red Devils

Marcus Rashford put in a stellar display on his return to Manchester United in their 2-0 win in the last 16 Carabao Cup over Burnley at Old Trafford.

The forward scored an excellent solo goal to put the game out of reach for the Championship side after Christian Eriksen opened the scoring in the first half for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Here’s how the stars of the Premier League side fared in their first game back in action after the World Cup.

Manchester United beat Burnley 2-0 in the Carabao Cup and advanced to the quarter-finals

MAN UTD (4-2-3-1):

Martin Dubravka – Very lucky to come out with a clean sheet. He made three high-profile mistakes: The worst of them allowed a simple back pass to roll under his foot. David de Gea will not be worried about his starting XI in the Premier League. 5

Aaron Wan Bissaka – Just what the side needed. He was tested early on in defense, but he looked good in attack and deserves the enormous credit he received from the fans for his assist down the stretch for the first goal. 6.5

United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka kept a clean sheet, but his performance was plagued with errors.

casemiro – Forced to play as an emergency centre-back, but he was comfortable and even made a crucial clearance off the line after one of Dubravka’s mistakes. 7

Victor Lindelof – I did not have the most comfortable of nights despite the clean sheet. He runs spotty for Benson and would have been relieved to see the wide Burnley player go. 6.5

Tyrell Malaysia – Another to struggle to the left in front of Benson. He later moved to right-back in a tactical reorganization and strangely seemed much more settled. 6.5

Playing as a makeshift centre-back, Casemiro put in a professional performance

Scott McTominay – Not your best evening. He offered little in attack and almost gave Burnley a route back into the game with a sloppy pass to Benson in the underpressed midfield. 6

christian eriksen – Back from the World Cup with a bang. An orderly display, albeit a bit calm, but they attacked the area well to anticipate a cross and grab the opening goal. 7

alejandro garnacho – All part of the learning curve for the exciting young striker who, after missing an excellent early chance, saw little of the ball before being snagged just before the hour mark. 5.5

Bruno Fernandes – Now he has come out of the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo and is catching up very well again. He played some excellent long passes which helped open up the Burnley defence. 7.5

Bruno Fernandes’ passing range was key in breaking up an orderly Burnley defense

Mark Rashford – No post-tournament hangover this time for the striker who is back with a bang and put on a display described as ‘electric’ by Gary Neville. His crisp low cross finisher was just as good as his 50-yard run to seal the Red Devils’ progression. 8

antonio martial – A halfway performance from the end. Not as effective as Rashford but more threatening than Garnacho and saw a couple of well saved tries by Burnley goalkeeper Peacock-Farrell. 7

SUBSTITUTES

luke shaw, 72 – Another of England’s World Cup stars who came on for a few minutes on his legs once the game looked safe. 6

Anthony, 58 – They gave half an hour but Burnley quickly got on top of him to prevent him from having too much influence. The Brazilian quickly grew frustrated and was booked after a petulant foul. 6

Marcus Rashford (right) showed no post-tournament hangover in an excellent display

Antonio Elanga, 72 – United had largely relaxed when the striker came on, limiting his impact on the game. 6

Brandon Williams, 85.

Fred 85.

Manager: Erik ten Hag – Made a strong team under the circumstances, but was rewarded with a professional display and match victory. He deserves credit for picking Casemiro to fill the role of central defense expert. 7

BURNLEY (4-2-3-1): Peacock-Farrell 6; Roberts 6, Harwood-Bellis 7, Beyer 6.5, Maatsen 6 (Taylor 90); Cullen 5, Cork 6.5 (Egan-Riley 89); Benson 7 (Churlinov 63.5), Brownhill 6 (Bastien 90), Gudmundsson 6.5; Barnes 5 (String 83).
