Jorginho’s penalty at the end of the first-half helped Chelsea narrowly beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park and secure a winning start to the new Premier League campaign.
Frank Lampard’s side were struck with an injury blow early on as Ben Godfrey was stretchered off with a nasty lower leg injury.
Debutant Raheem Sterling also had a goal disallowed for offside after Jordan Pickford parried N’Golo Kante’s shot into his path, but the flag denied the star signing a first Premier League goal at his new club.
