PLAYER RATINGS: Andre Onana distinguishes himself on a difficult Champions League night, and Man United were unlucky to lose Harry Maguire… but off-pace Antony struggles

  • The Red Devils were unable to unleash a moment of magic at home in a 1-0 defeat
  • Although United's defenders impressed, there was little attacking power
  • Man United are full as captain Bruno Fernandes says he thought Bournemouth would be easy It all starts

Manchester United limped to a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening, dashing their hopes of European competition for the rest of the season.

The odds were against Erik ten Hag's embattled side – who failed to bounce back at home after a 3-0 humiliation against Bournemouth this weekend – with the Manchester club needing results to find their way in the Copenhagen match and Galatasaray to secure a spot in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

But the loss at Old Trafford left United out of contention for even a Europa League spot, capping a disappointing run abroad in the midst of a turbulent season.

Here, Mail Sport's Joe Bernstein runs through who rose to the occasion and struggled to perform against Thomas Tuchel's team.

MAN UTD (4-2-3-1)

ANDRE ONANA-7 Safer than the wreck that conceded fourteen times in its first five Champions League games. Safe handling to deny Kane and Kimmich.

DIOGO DALOT – 6.5 Showed a positive intention for the future and ensured the right balance with defensive tasks. During half time he switched from right to left.

HARRY MAGUIRE-7 He looked strong and authoritative alongside Varane and it was cruel to see him retire with an apparent groin problem towards the end of the first half.

RAPHAEL VARANE – 7.5 I wondered why ten Hag didn't use it anymore. Was in the right place for six weeks in his first start until Kane's pass opened United for Bayern's first goal.

LUKE SHAW-7 Tiger-like battle with Coman before being replaced at half-time. Almost surprising Neuer with a long-range attack, the German punched away.

SCOTT McTOMINAY – 6 Energetic as ever, but he found Bayern a step up in his league from the Premier League defense he has breached in recent weeks. Willing to get into the final third.

SOFYAN AMRABAT – 6.5 Neat on the ball, but lack of pace was exposed when he let Sane get away from him for Bayern's best moment of the first half. Booked.

ANTONY – 5.5 I've tried to be more proactive than we've seen in the Premier League, but that just doesn't happen. Lack of pace to take advantage of Bruno's through ball. Booked.

BRUNO FERNANDES – 6 Hugged every teammate before kick-off as captain, but wasted his two big moments with wayward attacks. Recovered to deny Kane.

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO – 6 Put on his serious game face, but went too far when he grabbed Coman and sent him flying over the billboards. A buzz when he got the ball.

RASMUS HOJLUND – 5.5 Normally saved his best performances for Europe, but this wasn't one of them. Got very little from Upemacano and a strong Bayern defense.

REPLACEMENTS Evans (for Maguire 40) 5.5 Wan-Bissaka (for Shaw 45) 6.5 Hannibal (for Garnacho 75) Pellistri (for Antony 75) Mainoo (for Varane 80)

DIRECTOR ERIK TEN HAG – 6.5 Must be commended for not being stubborn and giving Varane a rare start. It made United stronger, but they lacked progressiveness.

..AND FOR BAYERN

HARRY KANE – 7 His movement troubled United, dropping deep and timing his forward runs well. Didn't score, but an expert pass set up Coman's goal in the second half.

REFEREE: ESPEN ESKAS (NORWAY) – 7 Simple. Waved away soft calls and dealt without cards with Bayern players surrounding Garnacho. Bookings for Antony, Amrabat and Goretzka correct.
