Planet Fitness gym-goer shocked to discover petty policy

A gym-goer at Planet Fitness was shocked to discover that the workout chain has a no-coat policy.

The runner, who goes by the name Camrun on TikTok, posted a video to share his frustration with the policy shortly before the new year.

He explained that he used his jacket to display the time and distance display on a treadmill while running at the gym.

After nearly an hour of running, an employee told him he was breaking the rules by leaving his jacket on the machine.

“The worker comes up to me after 40 minutes and says, ‘Hey, we actually have a no-coats-and-bags policy,'” the runner said in the clip, which had been viewed more than 350,000 times as of Thursday morning.

He noted that the employee never took his jacket away after telling him to take it to the front desk.

The runner, who said he regularly trains at Planet Fitness, insisted he had never heard of the policy until then.

However, the rule is a requirement for all gym-goers.

The policy, found on Planet Fitness’ websitestates that personal belongings “must be kept in lockers.”

Planet Fitness members are required to keep their bags and unused clothing off the gym floors.

The company explained in its rules that items on the gym floor can pose safety hazards and targets for theft.

Several viewers who watched the video were also shocked that the policy existed.

‘I take my bag with me every time! I have so many things in that bag that help me train,” one TikToker commented.

“It’s wild that they messed with you.”

Others claimed that enforcement depends on the gym and that the employee may have brought it up because their manager was a “Karen.”

“I think it goes from gym to gym. Because honestly my PF doesn’t care – people always have their bags and jackets with them,” one person wrote.

Daily Mail has contacted Planet Fitness for comment.

Several Reddit users who were already aware of the policy understood why Planet Fitness made it possible.

“More or less clothing and bags on the floor create a tripping hazard and coats and items hanging on machines also cause damage,” a Reddit user wrote in 2023 after.

“At my gym we had a boy’s backpack with strings that got caught in a treadmill. Not a great day for anyone involved.”

Others didn’t understand ‘why it matters’ when jackets don’t get in the way.

‘There’s literally no way anyone could step on my stuff. To think anyone would be mad at me for this is ridiculous to me,” one Planet Fitness member wrote.

Planet Fitness had approximately 19.6 million members and 2,637 locations as of September 2024, according to a Nov. 7 press release.

The gym has locations in the US, Puerto Rico, Canada, Panama, Mexico, Australia and Spain.

The company insists its gyms are ‘judgment-free’ zones and more than 90 percent of its clubs are independently owned.

Those who have made exercise a central part of their resolutions can achieve their goals by the end of the year.

Justin Hale, consultant and speaker at Crucial Learning, announced his tips in December 2024 CBS News.

‘It’s not that you have a motivation problem. You have a strategy or plan problem. Adjust your strategy, adjust your plan and you will be much more successful,” he said.

New Year’s Eve resolutions are hard to follow. According to figures, between 9 and 12 percent of Americans will have managed to keep them by 2024 KTVH.
