Police arrested a man and a woman for allegedly selling drugs after finding a large pile of syringes, $20,000 in cash and other illicit substances during a home raid.

The 36-year-old man and 43-year-old woman were arrested around 10:30pm Monday during an alleged drug deal in Hawker, northwest of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory.

Police searched the man’s car and found cash, prescription drugs and 19 zip-lock bags containing substances believed to contain illicit drugs, including synthetic heroin and methylamphetamine.

A home in the suburb of Cook was searched around 11:30 p.m. and found items similar to those seized from the man’s vehicle.

Shocking photos taken by police show the disorderly state of the alleged drug trafficker’s home, with a huge pile of syringes found piled up on a mattress on the floor.

Chemicals used to manufacture illicit substances were also found along with drugs and $20,000 in cash.

Police quickly evacuated the residence after discovering the dangerous chemicals, but will resume their search Tuesday once the home is declared safe.

The Cook man and Coombs woman will face court Tuesday on charges of receiving stolen property and trafficking in a controlled drug other than cannabis.

The man is also charged with possession of property suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

The arrests come after ACT Police launched an ongoing operation targeting the manufacture and distribution of illicit drugs.
