A stunned pig killed a butcher on its way to slaughter in Hong Kong.

Police said the 61-year-old butcher had shot the animal with a stun gun to euthanize it when it regained consciousness and knocked it to the ground.

A colleague from the Sheung Shui slaughterhouse in northern Hong Kong found the butcher with a meat cleaver still in hand and an injured left foot.

While police have yet to determine a cause of death, it appears the butcher was run over by the struggling pig on Friday and sustained a 15-inch (40cm) blade wound.

Police say the pig regained consciousness and dumped the butcher before dying.

The butcher was taken to the hospital but later certified dead.

The Hong Kong Department of Labor has launched an investigation and will recommend safety improvements.

a spokesman saying: ‘The Ministry of Labor regrets the death of the person and expresses its deepest condolences to his family.’

“We will complete the investigation as soon as possible to identify the cause of the accident, determine the responsibility of the duty bearers and recommend improvement measures.”

The Hong Kong Department of Food and Environmental Hygiene, which oversees the slaughterhouse, offered its condolences to the butcher’s family.

It is not clear if the pig managed to escape.

Pigs are considered highly intelligent due to their ability for social interaction, emotional contagion, ability to feel pain, and general hygiene.

They are rarely violent animals, except when protecting their young.
