Piers Morgan has continued to berate the Australian cricket team over the biggest controversy the Ashes have achieved in decades in a hilarious exchange of insults with his mate, Today host Karl Stefanovic.
The outspoken English media personality has taken every opportunity to blast Pat Cummins’ side over the highly controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow in the second Test, when the wicketkeeper was stunned as he left his crease on the last ball of an over.
Morgan even went so far as to compare the wicket to the infamous underarm ball Australia bowled against New Zealand in 1981, even saying his friend Shane Warne would think the incident was ‘pretty common’ if he were alive.
During his campaign against the team, he was labeled a ‘flog’ by Australian cricketing legend Merv Hughes – which Stefanovic was referring to as he began their battle of words on Wednesday morning.
Morgan (right) made the shocking claim that most Aussie cricket fans agree with him over the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow in the second Test – and his mate Karl Stefanovic loved the banter
‘Did you call me a whip? Because let me tell you, where I come from, to be flogged means to be beaten, as we just beat you at Headingley,” said Morgan, referring to England’s victory in the third Test.
“I don’t care what you want to call me from your safe seat there, Stefanovic,” he continued — pronouncing the host’s last name “Stef-an-oh-vich” for the first — but not the last — time in the segment.
Morgan further revealed that Stefanovic had suddenly stopped texting after the Aussies lost, contacting him ‘every two minutes’ as they had a 2-0 series lead with wins at Edgbaston and Lord’s.
After comparing the Headingley win to the infamous Bodyline Ashes series England won with controversial tactics in 1932-33, the UK broadcaster made a shocking claim.
The moment that enraged Piers: Jonny Bairstow’s stumps are thrown down by Alex Carey at Lord’s in an act that Morgan says dragged Australian cricket ‘right back into the gutter’
The outspoken broadcaster even said his mate Shane Warne (pictured together) would have thought the Aussies’ tactics at Lord’s were ‘quite ordinary’
Stefanovic kicked off the interview by pointing out that Australian cricketing legend Merv Hughes had called Morgan a ‘flog’ – prompting a hilarious response
“Most decent Australian cricket fans agree with me,” he said.
“You broke the spirit of cricket in that game, and so you are now reaping Captain’s whirlwind of retaliation [Ben] Stokes and his gang of merry Ashes-winning men, and we’re going to beat you at Old Trafford, beat you at The Oval, we’re going to win 3-2 and I’ll be back on your show to gloat for hours.”
Morgan admitted that he “didn’t like” the behavior of Lord’s members who abused Australian players in the famous Long Room on the ground following Bairstow’s sacking.
However, he branded the media reaction Down Under as hypocritical, especially after the public abused him when fast bowler Brett Lee “rearranged my ribcage” in 2013 with vicious bowling into the nets.
Today then showed a vision of him being punched by Lee, Stefanovic bursting into laughter and prompting Morgan to say, “What are you laughing at?” He almost killed me!’
He ended by addressing an earlier cheating controversy and announcing what he would do ‘when’ England took the series in what was to become one of cricket’s greatest comebacks.
“You’ve had a chance to show the world that you set out from Sandpapergate. What have you done? You dragged yourself right back into the gutter, you broke the spirit of cricket, you ran Jonny Bairstow when you knew it was wong.
“When we get the urn, I’m going to kiss it live on Today.”
Australia will take on England in the fourth Test in Manchester from July 19.
