Piers Morgan has mocked Man United after news broke that Erik ten Hag will stay on as manager.
There has been great uncertainty about the Dutchman’s position since United won the FA Cup final against Man City on May 25.
United’s new co-owner INEOS, which is responsible for football operations, carried out an end-of-season review before the decision was made to keep Ten Hag in his post.
The Premier League giants are now ready to discuss a new contract with Ten Hag, despite sounding out potential suitors after a disappointing season at Old Trafford which saw his side finish eighth.
And Arsenal fan Morgan relished the news as he simply tweeted: ‘Brilliant!’, accompanied by three laughing and three clapping emojis.
Piers Morgan has mocked Man United after news broke that Erik ten Hag will stay on as boss
There was great speculation about Ten Hag’s future after an evaluation at the end of the season
Morgan, an Arsenal fan, took in the news after it was confirmed the Dutchman would be staying
But Alejandro Garnacho’s brother Roberto was delighted that Ten Hag would stay
However, Roberto Garnacho, brother of United star Alejandro – who has made his breakthrough at the club under Ten Hag – expressed his delight at the news, adding: ‘TEN HAG I LOVE YOU.’
Other United fans voiced their opinions, with some supporting Ten Hag.
One said: ‘FINALLY!!!! Let’s make plans and move FORWARD,” before another added: “We will make history together. I love you.’
Another Ten Hag supporter said: ‘Right decision. Trust the process and fire managers every time. Two cups in two seasons. Things to work on of course, glad he gets the time to correct the mistakes.’
An additional supporter joked: ‘The right thing to do. Actually the only choice.’
Another posted a motivational message next to a photo of Ten Hag saying: ‘Never forget what it means to support this club and its manager.’
United’s decision to stay with Ten Hag came after potential replacements, including Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank, were sounded out by United officials, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS leading the process.
However, Tuchel stepped back from the role after meeting Ratcliffe in Monaco for talks last week.
Several United fans welcomed the decision which came after a long period
When considering all the different outcomes, United would have come to the clear conclusion that 54-year-old Ten Hag was the best man for the job.
Mail Sport understands United officials want to see how Ten Hag operates under what they believe will be a new structure aimed at ensuring he is given the best opportunity to succeed.
Omar Berrada will join from Manchester City as CEO on July 13. Jason Wilcox has already joined as technical director, while talks are underway to bring Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth to Old Trafford as sporting director.
The discussions with Ten Hag are said to have been positive, with both the club and the manager on the same page. Discussions have been opened about a contract extension.
However, some supporters were less happy with the news, with one frustrated fan saying: ‘As long as he changes his principles I’m fine with it, but if he doesn’t he’ll be gone for Christmas.’
Another said: ‘It is absolutely baffling that Ten Hag remains in this position. Winning a few domestic finals here and there is not enough. United must be a club that focuses on continued excellence. A team with a negative GD in the league is not continuous excellence. Ten Hag was out of his mind.’
Others, however, were not so sure and thought it was an unambitious move by the Red Devils
Ten Hag will now hope to build on United’s cup final against arch-rivals City last month
Another supporter also disagreed with Ten Hag’s stay but was just happy that United had finally come to a decision as they said: ‘Really don’t agree with the decision but I’m honestly just glad we got it got. Brightness.’
Although they won the FA Cup, the Red Devils actually had a dismal and chaotic season.
United crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage, finishing in their lowest position of the Premier League era at eighth, while having a goal difference of minus one.
However, Ten Hag will now hope to build on that cup final against arch-rivals City and return his side to the upper echelons of English and European football.
