The Hawaiian man killed in a fatal shark 'encounter' off the coast of Maui has been identified as 39-year-old Jason Carter.
Carter, from the coastal community of Haiku, died Saturday. Officials arrived on the scene around 11:19 a.m. as lifeguards carried the man to shore on a jet ski.
“Once on land, lifesaving measures were administered by first responder personnel until medical personnel arrived to transport the man to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment,” Maui police said in a statement.
The 39-year-old later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities did not characterize the incident as an assault or describe the extent of Carter's injuries, but the MPD extended their condolences to the man's family and friends.

Following the incident, warning signs were placed a mile in both directions.
Officials announced that nearby Baldwin Beach Park and Baby Beach would be closed Saturday.
According to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Carter was in the water during “mixed” water conditions due to high surf.
“By Sunday afternoon, if no further signs of shark activity are detected, the signs will be removed,” the department said in a Facebook post.
According to the DNLR's shark incident database, this is the eighth shark-related incident this year.
It is also the only one that ended with a fatal accident.
Carter's Facebook profile is full of photos of sunsets on the beach and the young man descending snow-covered slopes.

Friends took to social media to remember the man they knew as Jay.
“Love you, brother. You are a legend and so loved. We will continue to shred here and know you will too. RIP,” one man wrote.
“Oh man. Another great friend and a great person gone,” he wrote. “Rest in peace, my friend.”
Another friend wrote that his smile would “always stay in my mind,” adding, “Thank you for everything.”
Maui police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
