A photo has been taken of the Liverpool fan who died in Italy after travelling to watch his club play AC Milan in the Champions League.

Philip Joseph Dooley, 51, from Liverpool, died after he was hit by a car while crossing the motorway in Bergamo at 1am on Tuesday, Merseyside Police said.

The loyal Liverpool supporter had travelled to Italy on Tuesday evening for the club’s return to the Champions League.

In tribute, representatives from Liverpool and AC Milan laid a bouquet of flowers on the seat he would sit on at the San Siro.

A Liverpool spokesman said: ‘Our staff in Milan are working with local police and the consulate and continue to provide support to other fans affected by this devastating incident.’

‘The thoughts and prayers of everyone involved with the club are with Philip’s family, friends and supporters at this extremely difficult time.

‘Rest in peace, Philip.’

On X, a friend who posted Philip’s photo wrote: ‘Top man and a huge support to my family. You will be greatly missed. YNWA.’

The tragedy occurred less than 24 hours before Liverpool’s opening Champions League match against AC Milan at the San Siro.

According to reports in Italy, he had a ticket for the match in his pocket at the time of his death, along with his passport.

Dooley attempted to cross the freeway to reach the NH Hotel. He reportedly made it across three lanes of traffic before being struck by a car.

Police are also investigating whether the fan was “in an altered psychophysical state that could have influenced his actions.”

Liverpool came from behind to beat Milan 3-1 on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Arne Slot’s side started the match dramatically when old rival Christian Pulisic scored after three minutes, but the Reds were comfortable for most of the match and got back on track after a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

It was the fifth Champions League meeting between Liverpool and Milan. The most famous encounter was the 2005 final in Istanbul, when Liverpool came back from 3-0 down to win on penalties.

Just two years later, the teams met again in the Champions League final, with Milan taking revenge with a 2-1 victory.

More to come.
