A little girl was crushed and killed this week by a metal gate she helped close at her elementary school in Tucon, Arizona.
The nine-year-old, named Arlette, was remembered for her “positive attitude and funny attitude” as her family said she died in her favorite place in the world: her school.
Paramedics rushed to Centennial Elementary School Friday afternoon to revive the child, but she was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Police said Arlette was helping to close a large metal gate when it became loose and fell on top of her.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said the fatal ordeal occurred at 2:22 p.m.

Flowing Wells Unified School District said in a letter to parents, “This is a tragic event and we are all grieving.”
The district said counselors will support the school’s students and staff on Monday as they mourn the loss of little Arlette.
Her family, who remembered her as a wonderful, cheerful girl, are raising money for funeral costs after the “sudden loss” they were unprepared for.

‘Arlette was a wonderful daughter, sister, granddaughter and friend to many. She always touched the lives of those around her, had the biggest smile on her face and was always cheerful.

‘She was very active at school and had just finished second in cross-country. She always made her family smile with her positive attitude and funny attitude.
“She will be deeply missed by all the people she touched and especially by her family.
‘We are all devastated by the sudden loss of Arlette and were not prepared for the high costs of a funeral service. We want to give Arlette the memorial she deserves to honor her memory and say our final goodbyes.

Schreen Davis, a teacher in the district, wrote on social media, “Please share and help this wonderful family. Arlette’s passing has devastated our Centennial Elementary School community. Our hearts break for them.”
Tyler Kiecolt, another teacher, wrote, “What a sweet girl. Absolutely heartbreaking.”
Arlette’s family members have been contacted for comment.
