A ‘beautiful’ young woman who ‘accidentally’ died at Liverpool’s historic Adelphi Hotel was crushed by a wardrobe after waking in the middle of the night to mistake it for the toilet door.
Chloe Haynes, 21, was found dead at the famed city center hotel at 6.37am on September 10, after emergency services rushed to the scene following a ‘safety concern’.
Her heartbroken mother Nicola Williams, 49, has now revealed that the wardrobe is believed to have fallen off the wall and crushed her windpipe after getting out of bed ‘confused’ after a late night out.
Miss Williams, from Wrexham, said: ‘Chloe left Pwllheli about 7:40 pm and they went to the Adelphi, there was some kind of engagement party or something.
“By midnight she’d had shots and stuff and she was a little drunk, so her boyfriend took her back to the hotel to sleep in, and then he left again.
“Looks like she got out of bed confused, not knowing where she is, and opened the wardrobe door, maybe thinking it’s the toilet or the door to exit the room again. It was a big old heavy wardrobe and it fell on her and crushed her windpipe.’
Miss Williams revealed that Chloe’s boyfriend returned to the room in the early morning hours and was confronted by the horrific scene.
She said he screamed for help and two men from other rooms came to help lift Chloe’s wardrobe, but it was too late to save her life.

About her loss, Miss Williams said: ‘She loved animals, she had a little dog named Archie that she was obsessed with. There are so many pictures of them together.
“My little nickname for her was birdy. She was so tiny and tiny, and when she ate, she was like a little bird. She was quiet, she was one who didn’t speak unless it had to be said.
“But in the past 12 months she came out of her shell, gained confidence and had a wide circle of friends. She was kind and caring and seemed to connect with gay men, and that’s how she met the friend she went to Liverpool with.’
Miss Williams said her daughter enjoyed her job as a waitress at the holiday park, which also hosted her, and was “living her best life.”
She said: ‘She was planning to do her driving lessons and for that she had saved some money, and she wanted to go on holiday abroad with her friends. She just did all the things any 21 year old would do.
“She was beautiful, but she had struggled with self-confidence, so she didn’t really know how beautiful she was and that made her beautiful inside too. She was very nice.’
The mother says she is determined to find out how the incident could have happened and wants to “know every detail”.
“I don’t know how long she lay there before she died, and we’re told someone heard a noise from the room around 3 a.m. but didn’t report it,” she said.
‘I just can’t believe my daughter is never coming home because of a wardrobe, for maybe two screws in a wall. Every year I take a picture of all my kids on the couch in their Christmas outfits, and now someone is missing.’
A Liverpool City Council spokesman said: ‘We can confirm that we are conducting a health and safety investigation into a death at the Adelphi Hotel on 10 September.’
Britannia Hotels, which operates the Adelphi, has been approached for comment.
Three men were initially arrested in connection with her death, but were later released without charge.
The men, aged 26, 46 and 49, were arrested when Merseyside police launched an investigation into the woman’s death, but they later ruled that Miss Haynes had died ‘accidentally’.
A file has been passed to the coroner and a pre-inquest review will take place at a date yet to be confirmed.
At the time of the incident, Chief Inspector Lynsay Armbruster said: “We are in the very early stages of the investigation and are trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death.

“I would urge anyone who was at the hotel early this morning who saw or heard anything to come forward.”
As the tributes poured in for the 21-year-old, a friend said, “Rest in peace pretty girl.”
Another said, “Absolutely heartbroken.”
And a third said, “RIP beautiful.”
The hotel gained public recognition after participating in a 1997 documentary series about the wall, Hotel, which gave viewers a rare glimpse into the day-to-day running of the site.
Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs narrated the popular BBC series, which reached a viewership of 11 million after the first episode aired.
The hotel became popular in the early 20th century with passengers wealthy enough to cross the Atlantic on ocean liners such as the Titanic.
The Adelphi Hotel has been visited by many famous celebrities, including former Prime Minister Winston Churchill
There were also some famous celebrities, including former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who loved the hotel so much that he would hold strategy meetings there in the late 1940s.
Harold Wilson, another former prime minister, also went through the doors and even had his favorite suite named after him.
Barely bombed during Liverpool’s May Blitz in 1941, the city center hotel also attracted stars such as Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Bob Dylan.
And it’s not the first time someone has been found dead in the Adelphi either. Aristocrat Sir ‘Jock’ Delves Broughton was found dead in 1941 after committing suicide while on trial for the murder of his wife’s lover.
