Photo of Maroubra Beach in Sydney stuns Australia

A domestic cat caused a stir at a popular Sydney beach on Sunday after it was spotted lazing on the sand surrounded by beachgoers.

The feline, apparently on a leash, was enjoying the afternoon sun on Maroubra beach, in the southeast of the city.

However, its presence caused mixed reactions among locals as cats, like dogs, are prohibited on the beach.

One labeled the owners as fools.

“Some people shouldn’t have pets,” one woman said.

“Cat’s not happy, I hope he doesn’t pee or poop,” said another.

“That’s a nice expectation,” a third added.

Many jumped to the adventurous cat’s defense.

“My cat loves the beach,” said one woman.

“Just remember, the dogs and cats never leave as much trash, litter or mess behind as humans do,” another agreed.

‘People can have dogs on the beach even if they ignore the rules; it’s still okay because dogs are so cute and they’re people’s best friends,” a third argued.

‘But why make it so difficult for people when they take their cat with them? “I didn’t see anything wrong in the photo,” said a fourth.

‘Honestly, this cat really enjoyed exploring the area and greeting people for pets. He was well liked and seemed content with his leadership,” another added.

According to From Catster expert cat journalist Kristian Hitchcock, whether cats enjoy the beach depends on several factors.

‘Most importantly, is your cat used to venturing outside on a harness and leash under your constant supervision, and is he comfortable with outside noises and the unpredictable challenges they bring?

“If not, your cat is not a good candidate for a beach visit because he can be easily startled by other people, animals, traffic and noise, which could lead to injury or your cat escaping.”

Randwick City Council, which covers the Maroubra Beach area, states that cats are not allowed in the following places: beaches, children’s play areas, food preparation areas, community centres, schools and nurseries.
