According to multiple reports, the Washington Wizards have agreed to trade multi-time All-Star guard Bradely Beal to the Phoenix Suns.
In return, the Wizards will receive veteran point guard Chris Paul, Landry Shamet and multiple second round draft picks.
Trade talks are said to have gotten serious in recent days between the Wizards and the Suns, as well as the Miami Heat.
Beal’s agent Mark Bartelstein confirmed the transaction via ESPN.
“This was an extremely complicated process with so many different hurdles to overcome and Ted Leonsis and Michael Winger were incredible partners in making this happen,” said Bartelstein.
All-Star point guard Bradely Beal is traded to the Phoenix Suns in a blockbuster deal
All-NBA point guard Chris Paul will headline the trade package the Wizards received
“From the day Ted drafted Brad, he’s been by our side [former general managers] Ernie Grunfeld and Tommy Sheppard. They’ve always been supportive of Brad in every way and now we’ve experienced the exact same thing with Ted and Michael Winger. We are immensely grateful.’
Beal lifted the no-trade clause in his contract to partner fellow Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, along with center Deandre Ayton.
His no-trade clause will now carry over and remain in effect through his tenure in Phoenix.
The soon-to-be 30-year-old has just completed the first season of a five-year, $251 million contract that will seriously affect the Sun’s ability to add depth for the rest of the summer.
Last season, he averaged 23.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game.
With Beal’s future resolved, more attention will be paid to the futures of several other stars implicated in rumors this offseason, with Paul being one of the most pertinent.
Following the news that he was about to leave the Suns, multi-time All-NBA guard Paul had been linked to a number of teams, one of the most notable being the LA Lakers.
Washington has been waiting to see if starter Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis decide to opt for free agency or stay on the roster for the final year of their contract and possibly be ready for a full rebuild if the duo decides to leave.
Marc Stein reported that Paul earned nearly an additional $10 million as a result of the deal, and may be waived or bought out by Washington.
If he does achieve free agency, the Suns will not be eligible to re-sign him.
As a result of missing Beal, the Heat will turn their full attention to Portland Trail Blazers superstar Damian Lillard, in the genuine belief that he could try to force a trade, according to Bleacher Report and TNT.
Along with adding Beal, the Suns hire South Bay Lakers head coach Miles Simon and John Lucas III as members of Frank Vogels’ coaching staff.
