Phoenix Open closes gates and limits alcohol with course too crowded

Even the famous Phoenix Open has a limit on how much debauchery is allowed on a golf course.

The tournament, which takes place at TPC Scottsdale, no longer allowed fans into the grounds on Saturday afternoon around 2 p.m. because it was too crowded. They also briefly stopped alcohol sales at several locations around the course, hoping to slow down the party.

It is the first time that the Phoenix Open has had to turn away ticket holders – at least briefly.

The huge crowd came to Scottsdale despite less than ideal weather conditions. It was raining and in the 40s for most of the morning before the sun peeked through the clouds and temperatures rose into the 50s.

“Due to larger than normal crowds, the WM Phoenix Open gates are temporarily closed and shuttle service to the event has been suspended,” the tournament wrote on social media. “The shuttle service back to the parking lots will continue to operate. Check our channels regularly for updates.”

Dubbed ‘Greatest Show on Grass’, the Phoenix Open is unlike anything in golf. Crowds of up to 200,000 fans fill TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course with cheers, boos and the occasional beer binge.

The eye of the noisy hurricane is the stadium’s 16th hole, a tiered frat party of a par-3 where “Quiet Please” signs are met with ample disdain.
