In character: The pair starred in Phoebe’s comedy-drama Fleabag, where she played an angry, grief-riddled woman trying to heal, while Andrew starred as a ‘hot’ priest.
The pair have been close friends since she starred in Phoebe’s comedy-drama Fleabag, in which she played an angry, grief-stricken woman trying to heal, while Andrew starred as a ‘hot’ priest.
Phoebe previously spoke about why Andrew’s Hot Priest broke the fourth wall in the second season of Fleabag.
The actress spoke to BAFTA about the plot twist of The Making of Fleabag in 2020, explaining why Fleabag and The Priest felt “witnessed” throughout the season.
She said she wanted a love interest for Fleabag who would “match her intelligence and wit,” explaining that she wanted The Priest to “mirror” her character’s experience with the camera, but with God.
Phoebe explained, β(Fleabag) has a relationship with the camera all the time, and it was interesting to have someone who has something similar, he’s mirrored (because) he has God.
‘And she’s being watched by the camera all the time, and ultimately the big question for her is whether or not she can let go of the camera β and he’s being seen by God all the time and always has to check that all the time .
βAnd ultimately he has the same question, so I felt like it would be a really good way to mirror each other’s journeys.β
When asked if she felt like Fleabag was speaking to anyone in particular when she broke the fourth wall, Phoebe claimed it was more of a symbolic presence in the same vein as how The Priest would view God.

She added, “I feel like it’s the pressure of being watched, and the feeling of being watched, and the feeling that if you’re not seen, does it matter what you do, does it matter out?
βShe constantly struggles with the audience’s need to validate her. It’s a very charged… relationship.
‘For me it was more about that, and the same goes for him (The Priest), constantly asking questions β there’s a pressure on him all the time, asking him if he’s a good person.’
The second season of Fleabag ended with the titular character saying goodbye to the camera, while The Priest chose to stay with God by retaining his priesthood.
Phoebe closed the show with her second performance and stuck to that stance despite fans calling for more, as she felt it was the ‘right decision’.
